Culinary School Educational Programs
Find Culinary Schools in Your Area...
The educational offer in culinary schools is similar to many other schools. If you want to explore yourself in a specific specialty it is important to know before starting at a culinary school, which type of program you need to attend. You have the choice between three basic types of programs. These are the Associate’s degree programs, Bachelor’s degree programs, and diploma or certificate programs.
Associate’s Degree programs
In the culinary arts profession the associate’s degree programs are the most popular. One of the reasons why it is the most popular program is because you don’t have to make an exact choice of specialty if you’re not sure which area of the industry you would like to work in. These programs will mainly teach you the basics of culinary arts. But also some programs which may be more specialized in some specific courses like the international kitchen, or bakery and pastry.
An associate degree program typically takes two years to complete. It is a good starting point if you just get acquainted with culinary arts and when you have finally earned the degree, you will have a lot of career options. These career options include working at restaurants, pubs, clubs, hotels, catering companies or institutions. After you have completed the associate's degree program you can also focus more on a special area of the study by starting the four-year bachelor’s degree program in culinary arts.
Bachelor’s degree programs
As you could have read in the part of the associate’s degree program, the bachelor’s degree programs are more focused on a special area of culinary arts. There is a wide variety of schools which offers a bachelor’s degree program in culinary arts. The difference between the bachelor’s - and the associate’s program is that the bachelor’s degree program in culinary arts combines culinary arts and hospitality management with a combination of liberal arts, business and administration courses. The emphasis will be more on management courses to prepare the students for leadership positions within the fine food industry and hospitality. It takes four years to finish the bachelor’s degree program.
Diploma and Certificate Programs
Diploma and certificate programs offer very basic courses in culinary arts. The program is mostly popular among culinary art students who are looking for a basic education program for entry-level work and among students who already have a higher level degree but who would like to incorporate in some specialized areas in culinary arts. The bachelor’s degree program takes 8 to 10 weeks to complete.
