Sailing students can earn a sailing certificate. To become a sailor in the United States you need to hold a Coast Guard-issued document and a certificate. The U.S. mostly requires American citizens to fulfill the job as sailor or seaman. There are some levels of the career of a sailor or seaman. A beginner is classified as a ordinary seaman. He or she can be assigned to one of the three unlicensed departments: engine, steward, or deck.
