A sailing school is an institution which teaches students the basic fundamentals of sailing, navigation courses, and intermediate and advanced sailing techniques. The students will be taught from the required reading and from sailing text books to be prepared to sail in practice. Next to the sailing techniques the student will be prepared for the way of life of a sailor. The main tasks of a sailor is to operate the vessel and the deck equipment under the direction of the officers of the ship. A sailor also needs to keep the non-engineering areas in good condition. Sailors who are experienced are seamen on oceangoing vessels, but they can also operate a vessel on inland waters.
